Modern ART paints Soweto pink!

This December Modern ART took on the challenge of creating 20 murals across the streets of Soweto and Alexandra, in an effort to let local communities know that the South African ART regimen now includes dolutegravir as part of the first-line treatment.

The murals are positioned in prime spots, which include bus stops, health facilities, schools, taverns and free WIFI spots.

The murals were well received by the community. People were excited to see a renewed commitment to the fight against HIV. A young man living in Moroka North said: “You have brought this campaign to the right place, everyone is focusing on COVID, and they have forgotten about HIV.”

Young and old took the time to stop and marvel at the work done by the SenzART creatives. The team, led by local Artist Senzo Nhlapho, worked over a period of 10 days to complete the mural project. “This is an important campaign, especially during this festive season where most people tend to behave recklessly. With these walls they will have a constant reminder that HIV has not gone away.”

The bright pink murals, also contain QR codes that allow users to scan them and download the Modern ART app, which contains the latest information about ART. Users also have the option of visiting the website, or following the Modern ART social media platforms for instant updates.

Across the rest of the country, TAC activists and community advocates have disturbed hundreds of pamphlets and posters in health facilities as well as local communities about the new ART.
